Using the Charity Listing

The questions below will help donors locate agencies in the Charity Listing in order to make a pledge. Please familiarize yourself with Charity Listing or Keyworkers Guide for answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the campaign, or log on to www.opm.gov/cfc.

  • Beginning September 2007, all charities participating in the CFC have been assigned a new five-digit CFC code by OPM.  Pledges made using the former four-digit codes cannot be honored.  Use this Cross-Reference [271kb] spreadsheet, containing both the old four digit and the new five digit codes, to identify national and international CFC charities.  To find local charity code information use the Campaign Locater.  For more details on the new codes, consult the New Five-Digit Charity Code Fact Sheet.

  • Organizations are listed in sections: Local, National, & National/ International. There are often local and national chapters of the same organization- donors should make sure they are giving to the chapter they intend.

  • All agencies are indexed together alphabetically. Sometimes they are listed by the entity's legal name other than the common name you may know them by; or they could be listed starting with "The" in the index. Please contact your CFC representative if you need help locating an agency listing for a donor.

  • Charities are either members of a federation, which act as "umbrella" fundraising organizations for hundreds of member charities (a gift to a federation, such as Earth Share; United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area; Community Health Charities; Military, Veterans & Patriotic Service Organizations of America, to name a few, is shared among its member organizations and is a way to reach many organizations through a single gift) or independent, meaning it is not affiliated with a particular federation. For more on federations, see your Charity Listing.

  • Donors may designate only to charities listed in this year's Charity Listing. Write-ins are not allowed.

  • If donors wish to designate to more than five (5) charities, they must write the additional designations on a separate pledge form, STAPLE it to the original pledge form and write "1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3" with their name and agency filled out etc. to ensure that their full designations are correctly credited. DO NOT turn in contributions as separate pledges, or donors may not be properly credited with their full gift for tax purposes.

  • Donors who designate to specific charities have full control over where their money goes. Charities which receive no designations do not receive any funding from CFC. Donations to the Undesignated fund are shared proportionally only by agencies which receive designations.

  • Encourage Donors to keep their Charity Listing in case they or someone they care about needs assistance. This valuable resource will help you locate agencies that can help.
